It’s About Time
Today the Painted Lady had a volleyball game. This is the fourth year that she and her classmates have played together. Some of the girls have natural athletic abilities. Others do not. Yet they all play together, side by side, as friends, as a team.
Today the team celebrated. It was the first time that one player served the ball over the net in her four years of play. I didn’t know she hadn’t served the ball over. It’s not something that was ever mentioned or broadcasted, because it really wasn’t important. So to witness this event was fascinating.
It wasn’t so much the joy on her face, although that was heart warming. It was more the reaction of her teammates. Their smiles and cheers showed that they didn’t care that she had never hit the ball over before. They cared that she hit the ball over today. She did it when she was ready. When it was time. And they celebrated her and her tiny little victory. Because that’s what a friend does. That’s what a teammate does.
Time does wait for some people. And when it does, it’s a thing of beauty.
