The 200 Club

Back when the Magician was in 2nd Grade, his teacher, Mrs. Smith, introduced the 200 Club. It was a way to motivate the kids to learn how to count to 200, and then 300, and so on.

When I started hearing about this club, I casually asked the Magician about it. I was careful not to put too much pressure on him to be Top of the Class, but secretly wanting him to be there, or at least close to it.

His response, “No, I don’t want to be in the club.” And, then he nonchalantly continued, “Because it’s not really a club. They don’t do anything.”

That was the day I realized I had a really different kid on my hands. Oh, there were signs before that, but it was my first real wake-up call.

I see now, he could never be in the 200 Club. He is a Club of One.

And I love that about him.
